A hangover is indicative of your brain being dehydrated. So, that signature pounding headache is due to dehydration (or the shrinking of your brains membrane).
It is very important to always stay hydrated with water (or another non-alcoholic beverage) when you are drinking. This will help reduce the risk of extreme dehydration.
Water is NOT a hangover cure but can help with prevention.
Be careful if you are taking headache medication. This might temporarily mask the feelings, but your body still needs time to process the alcohol out of your body. You might not be okay to drive.
